Everyone knows that being with friends, engaging in fun and stimulating activities, and enjoying the moment is the best. Community programs such as Among Friends for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers are being recognized as important in helping to slow cognitive decline while providing a variety of activities that appeal to their participants.
Among Friends is not a one-size-fits-all kind of program. Each of our participants brings his or her own preferences, skills, knowledge, and hobbies to which our staff and volunteers are attuned. While everybody likes a cup of coffee, a treat, and a chat at the beginning of the day. the rest of the day might find us doing lots of different things.
Sometimes we build things--Free Little Library boxes, birdhouses, or chessboards. Sometimes we play miniature golf. Sometimes we dance. Sometimes a friend of the program brings his favorite classic car for us all to look at and sit in. Sometimes we arrange flowers. And sometimes we just sit in the sunshine and have a good talk.
Such activities, while varied and fun, help those living with dementia to maintain their cognitive abilities and even slow down the progression of the disease. Our program gives both our participants and volunteers a sense of purpose and belonging. We have a welcoming environment that provides a sense of connection to others in a familiar and comfortable space where participants feel less anxiety and are happy.

Dogs sometimes come to visit. We may decorate a cake, share our neighbor's photos and stories from his trip to Alaska, or give out Halloween candy to the local daycare goblins. Each day brings a variety of engaging activities. If participants prefer a puzzle, a game of checkers or cards, or a quiet moment with soft music, we can do that as well.
Experts confirm the importance of continued social engagement in slowing cognitive decline. By providing a safe place and caring staff and volunteers, Among Friends is a wonderful program for those experiencing dementia. Tuesdays and Thursdays are filled with joy, laughter, music, and comradery. For caregivers, those days provide the rest they need for themselves while being assured that their loved ones are in a great place with good people.
