Among Friends participants and volunteers recently packaged petfood to be donated to the River Falls Food Pantry.
When families face food insecurity, it is not only the human members of those families who go hungry but also their dogs and cats. For that reason, most food pantries also offer food for families' beloved pets.
The Wisconsin Humane Society is reporting an increased demand for petfood at area food pantries in order for families to keep their pets at home. But because those resources aren't always available, shelters are seeing a significant increase in surrendered pets.
Through the generosity of local veteranarian Dr. Richard Jones-Witthuhn, Among Friends was able to package dog and cat food that will go directly to families in need.

Many of our participants have pets of their own and know how important they are to their families. So, they are enthusiastic in wanting to make the lives of area dogs and cats just a little bit easier in these particularly difficult times. It is also a fun--even if a bit messy and smelly--project for us. While scooping kibble from bins to plastic bags, we were able to share stories of our own pets past and present while engaging in a meaningful activity. For those individuals experiencing dementia, activities that provide fun, sociability, and purpose help slow cognitive decline.
Area food pantries would appreciate donations for both families and their pets right now. You can find food pantries in River Falls, Prescott, Hudson, Ellsworth, Spring Valley, and other local communities. Please consider contributing to them if you are able.

Excited to hear about opportunities for people living with dementia to engage in meaningful acts of service.
